Thermostatic Mixing valves

We have two types of systems in general in our domestic and commercial bathrooms or washing facilities:

  • Warm or Tempered Water System
  • Hot Water

Warm water or tempered water system which is water that is used for hygiene washing purposes e.g taking a shower, washing your hands, having a bath etc.
The temperature at the outlet ranges from 40 – 50 degrees Celsius
Depending on different factors such as

For the young and old, temperatures should not be over 45* C

This would include:

  • Aged Care Facilities
  • Primary and secondary Schools
  • Hospitals
  • Disabled wash areas

Everybody else 50*C is the maximum permitted temperature

It is an Australian requirement that all hot water systems be heated to 65* C to eliminate the growth of a bacteria called legionnaires disease which can be deadly.

This is where a TMV or thermostatic mixing valve comes into play

Hot and cold water entering the valve is mixed to a temperature set by the licensed plumber based on the factors listed above.

A thermally sensitive mechanism inside the valve automatically adjusts to allow for the required temperature setting,
simply by mixing hot and cold water it also provides a fail safe and can accommodate in variations and fluctuations in the supplied water.

TMVs are required to be serviced at least once a year by a licensed plumber with a TMV endorsement.
